PAST PERFECT TENSE

Il Past Perfect Tense si usa spesso in inglese quando, mettendo in relazione due eventi che sono avvenuti nel passato, vogliamo specificare quale evento è accaduto prima.

Formazione del Past Perfect Tense

Questo tempo viene costruito usando il verbo HAVE (al Past Tense), e il Past Participle di un verbo. Ecco alcuni esempi con il verbo regolare walk e il verbo irregolare take:

Soggetto	HAVE	Past Participle
I	had	walked taken
You	had	walked taken
He	had	walked taken
She	had	walked taken
It	had	walked taken
We	had	walked taken
You	had	walked taken
They	had	walked taken

Uso del Past Perfect

Il Past Perfect è usato per specificare quale fra due eventi è avvenuto prima.

Immaginiamo che due azioni siano accadute nel passato:

He arrived at the station. (E' arrivato alla stazione)

He took a taxi. (Ha preso un taxi.)

Il Past Perfect è usato per specificare la sequenza delle due azioni passate.

He had arrived at the station. He took a taxi.

(Era arrivato alla stazione. Ha preso un taxi.)

In questo caso sappiamo che prima è arrivato alla stazione e poi ha preso un taxi.

After he had arrived at the station, he took a taxi.

(Dopo essere arrivato alla stazione, ha preso un taxi.)

Questo può essere molto utile quando si racconta una storia o si mettono in relazione degli eventi passati.

Esempi:

Sarah had just started eating, when the Robertsons arrived unexpectedly.

(Prima Sarah aveva cominciato a mangiare, poi sono arrivati i Robertson)

When the film started, they had already gone to bed.

(Erano già andati a letto quando è cominciato il film)
