Unit 2 - Health: Illness

Sick

When someone is not feeling well you can ask the following questions:

"What's the matter?"

"What's wrong?"

"How do you feel?"

You can reply in different ways depending on the illness, in general you can reply:
"I don't feel well."

"I feel sick."

"I've got a cold / flu / fever /hangover."

"I hurt myself."

'Hurt' is a verb which is used to describe pain.
"My leg hurts a lot. I hurt it yesterday while playing soccer with my friends."

If you have aches or pains you may use the noun 'ache' like
stomachache, toothache, backache, earache, headache.

For example you can say :
"I've got a terrible stomachache because I ate too much ice-cream." or "I’ve got a painful headache because I spent the whole day on the computer."

On the other hand other common physical injuries can be expressed using
Bruise - "I've got a big bruise on my leg because I bumped it on the car door."
Cut - "John cut his finger yesterday evening while cooking."
Burn - "Peter has a serious burn on the back of his shoulder."
Twist - "I twisted my ankle yesterday at the soccer game."

Notice that all of the above can be used both as a Verb or Noun.
