London is the capital of England
and the United Kingdom. It is situated in the
south-east of England on the river Thames.
It was founded two thousand years ago by the Romans
who called it Londinium. Now it is a leading global
city, the biggest metropolitan area in Europe, and
a major financial centre.
London is full of
historical buildings and fascinating tourist
attractions. The government buildings of
Westminster Palace and the famous clock Big Ben
is one of the best-known sights.
Buckingham Palace
is the official residence of the Queen.
The Tower of
London was a palace, fortress and prison and now houses the
Crown Jewels.
The spectacular botanical
garden at Kew with its famous palm house hosts the

Oxford
Street is known for its upmarket shops like Harrods, and
Hyde Park is popular for sports and sometimes hosts

London has a very diverse range of cultures,
ethnic groups and religions, and over three hundred
different languages are spoken within its boundaries - so
don't worry, if your English isn't perfect! The African Caribbean
community celebrate their culture every year at the vibrant
Notting Hill Carnival.
There is always plenty to do
in London, with art galleries, concerts,
