I principali pronomi relativi sono:

Who	usato per le persone in posizione di soggetto	Peter, who is a teacher, lives in Brighton.
Whom	usato per le persone in posizione di oggetto (spesso sostituito da Who nel linguaggio informale)	Sally, whom Peter met yesterday, is a clerk.
Which	usato per le cose e gli animali in posizione di soggetto o oggetto con o senza preposizione	Susan has a computer which is very old. That is the car by which Susan went to Oxford.
That	usato per le persone, gli animali e le cose in posizione di soggetto o complemento oggetto	There is a bookshop that sells only science-fiction books.
Whose	usato per le persone, gli animali e le cose con il significato di possesso	Andrew, whose brother lives in the States, is Susan's boyfriend.

Proposizioni non-restrittive danno informazioni extra sul sostantivo, ma non sono essenziali
The book on the armchair, which is near the sofa, is mine.

Proposizioni restrittive
danno informazioni essenziali sul sostantivo
The book that you bought yesterday is on the armchair.

The book which you wanted for years is now available in paperback.

Attenzione all'uso di that: non si usa nelle proposizioni non restrittive

In Inglese si tende ad omettere i pronomi relativi quando hanno la funzione di complemento oggetto o quando sono trasformati in complemento oggetto con lo spostamento della preposizione.

Es: I bought the book which I had seen at the library

Questa frase diventa -> I bought the book I had seen at the library

Es: I saw the girl with whom John went out

Questa frase diventa -> I saw the girl John went out with
