RESTAURANTS

Step 1

If you go out to dinner in Britain, you will certainly notice that most restaurants serve exotic food - Chinese, Indian, Greek, Italian and French cuisine are the most common. There are few good quality English restaurants but you can be served a variety of typically English dishes in pubs.

You often have two or three courses: a starter (soup, paté, or pasta dishes etc.), the main course (meat or fish with vegetables) and dessert or pudding. But if you are having a pasta dish, please bear in mind that it will not taste like the pasta you have at home in Italy. If you are having steak, you may choose to have it rare, medium or well done.

Step 2

Meat and fish are commonly served with potatoes cooked (in a variety of ways), peas, carrots or other seasonal vegetables. Meat can also be served with Yorkshire pudding (a baked unsweetened pastry) and gravy (a sauce made with meat juices and seasoning). As a matter of fact, most dishes are served with special sauces, whether hot and spicy - sweet or creamy

Another typical dish is pie (meat, fish, fruit or other food baked inside or under a crust of pastry). The restaurant or lounge (in pubs) often has two separate areas: a smoking and non smoking area. When you pay the bill you often leave a tip, which is usually 10%, if service is not included.
