SIGHTSEEING

Step 1

If you are visiting a new town or city, you may want to do a bit of sightseeing. You may choose to visit particular museums, art galleries or sights (monuments, buildings, bridges). Sightseeing tours are usually available on buses, often double-deckers, or even on boats. If you have plenty of time, you may hire a tourist guide and go on a tour of a castle, a palace or cathedral

If you choose to visit the place alone, a guidebook will be very useful. It is always a good idea to buy a map of the town so that you don’t get lost. If you have already seen the sights, you might prefer to go round shops and markets and maybe spend a lot of money on souvenirs and post cards. You cannot usually buy stamps at the newsagent’s so you will need to find a post office or a dispenser.

Step 2

If the town is a touristy place, it will probably be crowded and even packed with people, especially in the summer. Be careful you don’t lose your personal belongings while sightseeing. But if you do, look out for the nearest Lost and Found Office before you go to the police station. You must also beware of pickpockets; tourists are an easy prey. In the evening you may want to go to a pub to taste local food or simply go there for a drink.

Ask information about local music festivals, concerts and nightlife in general. Tourist Information offices will be able to give you leaflets for all the events that are on when you are there. And, of course, bring plenty of films for your camera; you will definitely take lots of photographs and show your friends you had a great time.
